A little about my "roots"
Hawaiian music so much a part of my back ground.
I have still been
amazed at the soothing effects it has on the mind.
I listen to it when i'm in a sad mood, or want to
remember the Islands beauty.
Picturing in my mind the family luau's, all my uncles.
cousins and friends having a great time, lots of
beer, food, and of course the entertainment. All that
was needed was a reason for a party and it would be
there. Kalua pig! cooked in the ground, sounds bad
doesnt it? But that is soooo good. Poi that purple glue
stuff, not something you can just like, to me its
yucky, but it is and always will be a staple of the
Hawaiians. Hawaii is know for its "aloha" that means
many things, hello, goodbye, love, to name a few.
The music....now its not for the rappers, the rave, or
anything other. It is for Hawaii. It is what Hawaii
stands for. Slack Key Guitar.......beautiful, one of
my favorite. Those who master the art are known Island
wide. thats what your listening to now if you clicked it.
Now imagine your in the Islands, at a luau by the beach,
everyone drinking, hehe even the kids in their "hiding" place.
Lots of Aloha all around..Music is flowing constantly.
Kids playing tag on the beach, some swimming in the ocean,
in the moonlight. The lights from the outdoor luau area
flickering. Palm trees seem to be swaying with the sounds
flowing through them. This is what the Hawaii I know is
about. This is what makes me want to return. This is my
home. My destiny. Hawaii is my Aloha. The people who are
my roots. The music I have come to adore. You can leave
the Islands, but the Islands never leave you.
Hawaiian Music is said to be the soul of the Hawaiian people, a preservation of
the Hawaiian culture.
In ancient times, having no written history or written language, the Hawaiians
passed from generation to generation, the traditional sources of knowledge
thru their chants and expression of music. Stories that perpetuate their culture
& history, their language and religious beliefs of ancient gods and goddesses,
of guardians and ancestral spirits, of myths & legends, of the beauty and
wonder of nature, the chronological genealogy of their chiefs, all rich in the
narrative of great historical events past and present.
Hawaiian Music today, continues to perpetuate our culture with the knowledge
and love for these islands and the people of Hawaii - an important link in the
preservation of the ever so rare species of "Native Hawaiian."
Today, "We" are the guardians of our culture and of this land! Music is a
special gift of love to be shared and respectfully passed on to those
generations to come after us...our beneficiaries of this beloved land, our
children, and their children, and theirs.....the future Hawaiians. Luna-'97
